Flying to HK

Flying to HK

Time flies!!! Today is our last morning in Canada. I can’t even believe that I have spent 19 days in Canada! Time has gone so fast – too fast! Today, we go back to Hong Kong. We have a 14-hour flight soon! See you in Hong Kong! Bye!

Hey! Let me tell you a secret!  We wrote two cards to Mimi and Eric as a surprise! We gave them to them in the Vancouver Airport.  They read them and they both cried! It warmed our hearts that what we had to say was so special to them. They were amazing hosts. They didn’t do things for us, they taught us how to do things by ourselves. They were patient, kind, and giving. They were fun, friendly, and they spent all day, every day, interacting with us, not as students, but as family and friends.

At the same time, they always corrected our English and gave us opportunity after opportunity to use English. In fact, we had ‘The JAR’ and if we spoke anything but English, we had to put 1 dollar Canadian in ‘The JAR’. They also really cared about building up our character, so if we lied, or helped someone lie, even by staying silent when we knew something, we had to put $10.00 in ‘The JAR’. Now, you would think there would have been a lot of money in ‘The JAR’ but there wasn’t much money at all!

I wish I could have spent more time in Canada, so that I could learn English in a native country and explore more. I look forward to going to Canada in the future. Without a doubt, I would invite everyone to go to Canada and have the same experience as mine! My journey changed the way I see the world. It opened me up.

Canadians are so friendly, helpful and polite. They are also very clean and very concerned about the environment. They recycle, and in some cities, like Victoria, they have banned the use of plastic bags. The air is clean, fresh, and believe it or not, even though the temperature is cooler, it is a nice cooler. When it is cooler, it doesn’t feel as cold as Hong Kong.  For example, when it is 13 degrees in Hong Kong, it feels quite cold, but most mornings the temperature was around 13 degrees, but it didn’t feel as cold. Mimi says this is because Hong Kong has way more humidity, which makes us feel colder and hotter in Hong Kong.  And she is right, because some days the temperature was almost 30 degrees and it didn’t feel too hot either. I liked the weather.

I hope you have enjoyed my blog. The pictures, the videos, and everything I’ve written so you could share my journey with you.

Grizzly Bears

Grizzly Bears

What a beautiful morning! We woke up early and felt excited. Guess what!? Because we were going to have breakfast with two grizzly bears. Usually, most adult female grizzlies weigh 130–180 kg, around 290–400 lb, while adult males weigh on average 180–360 kg, around 400–790 lb. After taking a huge cable car, we arrived at the top of Grouse Mountain, where the bears live.

The view was spectacular and the air quality was pristine; however, we were quite dissatisfied with the flies. Up to this time, we had hardly seen a mosquito or a fly, but up here….WOW!!! The flies were crazy. They landed everywhere and anywhere. I was afraid to open mouth in case one flew in my mouth.  You really can’t imagine how many there were. I just want to scream! Actually, they didn’t bite me, but they liked flying towards my face! So, although seeing the grizzlies was really neat, I found it hard to listen to our guide and learn very much about them, because, as you can imagine,I spent my whole time, chasing flies away from my face.

This made me very frustrated before having our breakfast buffet; however, the buffet was delicious and had a wide variety of food – even salmon, but it was smoked salmon, but I think fresh salmon is the BEST! Regardless, I loved the breakfast, because not only was the food delicious,
but it was inside, away from those miserable flies!!!

I still loved having this experience, and the guide said that it was unusual to have the flies, so maybe a whole bunch of young flies just happened to hatch on our morning on the mountain, but the grizzly bears are huge and hairy, and the weather was perfect.

Malls Shopping

 Malls Shopping

This morning we were to go cycling around Stanley Park, but the day started with rain, so instead, we went to the Pacific Mall to do some shopping. We enjoyed the mall and being in downtown Vancouver.  Afterward, we decided to go to the Vancouver Aquarium rather than cycling, because although it wasn’t raining, it still looked like it might.

Another day, we also had time to shop! What an exciting day! Today we went to Hillside Mall and Uptown Mall. They are both big shopping centers that provide various products, such as clothing, snacks, cosmetics and brand name clothes. It was great to see the difference between shopping in Hong Kong and shopping in Canada. One big difference is that you can try on clothes and not buy them and no one cares.

Hey! Here is Takky and I TRY ON clothes in Holister!

Also, we at the mall eatery. I had some Chinese food at the food court. The food reminded me of Hong Kong. LOL...However, it didn’t taste as good.
But, I bought two pair of earrings and some cosmetics for my mom and me.

Capilano Suspension Bridge/Treetop Adventure/Cliff Walk

Capilano Suspension Bridge

Today, we went to Capilano and did three activities. The Capilano Suspension Bridge, the Treetop Adventure, and the Cliffwalk.  We had never done any of these before, so we were all scared. The suspension bridge shook will we were walking, so we had to hold tightly onto the ropes.

But we never wanted to give up, because we all thought we would not be able to do this in Hong King or maybe not again in our lives. Therefore, although we were full of fear, we held onto the ropes and took our first steps as it was a good challenge for us. We need to learn to let go of our unreasonable fears, because even though it felt like we might fall into the valley, the truth is the bridge was very safe. The activity though made us very excited. I loved doing this activity and getting over my fear.

It's totem!

Treetop Adventure

Also, we experienced the Treetop Adventure. This was very interesting, because I had no idea that people can build walking paths between treetops before. I would not have ever imagined this had I not experience this activity. When we were walking on it, it made us feel a bit like primitive jungle people who used to live in the wild.

Cliff Walk

After doing the treetop adventure, we walked back across the suspension bridge to the Cliffwalk. The Cliffwalk was a lot more stable than the suspension bridge, so it didn’t seem as scary and it was neat to be able to look down into the fall and watch the river. The place was very scenic.

When we at Capilano, we also got to see the totems and learn about First Nations history. This was quite interesting, because I like history, and I had liked the First Nations exhibits at the BC Museum. I found this area of Capilano quite peaceful and eye-catching, because the totems are very large. I even had my picture taken inside a totem. Totems tell the story of a First Nations clan. I don’t know how to read a totem to understand what it says, but I do know how to appreciate.

Hiking

Hiking

Today we went to Temperate Rainforest hike. Because we couldn't wait to climb, so we had our lunch in cars during a traffic jam (due to road construction), and I have to say it was a really huge sandwich and I couldn't finish it, although it tasted good! The ingredient included avocado, ham, tomato and lettuce.

Finally, we got to the forest and started our hiking. The sand is gold and soft, just like the furry blanket. We also played the swing which hanged at there! Here are some photos!I must say the beach has a magnificent sight to see! Look at my photos. Isn't it so pristine there, huh?

Also, we came across a field of daisies! Actually, daisies are a common European species of flowers. I love its color and shape, simple but gorgeous! Honestly, I have took many photos of it!

Coppermine Educational Tour

Coppermine Educational Tour

The weather was gorgeous today. It’s perfect to have some outdoor activities! Today, we went to Squamish to tour an old Coppermine, and then, onto Whistler to experience the mountains and SNOW!!! Yes!! Real SNOW!!! But before I get carried away…let me tell you about my Coppermine experience.

We joined an educational tour about Coppermine and the mining of copper. This was a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to learn about chemistry, geology, technology, and history. But before our tour started, we were able to pan for gold, gems, and copper in ponds of water. Linda, Takky, Emily and I all found some of all three. The gems I managed to find are so colorful and I am blessed to have found them and have them as a souvenir – my own little piece of REAL CANADA!

Also,
we had the opportunity of taking a train into the actual mine, which meant going right inside the mountain.

We learned so much about how the mining was done and the life of the miners. WOW! Their lives were very hard indeed. Many men died in the mountain, mining for copper. We also learned how they kept the light in the tunnels, so that they could see what they were doing. For example, in the very early days, they only had candles before more advanced technologies gave them things like headlamps to see by.  Can you imagine how difficult it would be to work with the use of a single candle inside a mountain tunnel.

Whistler

Whistler

We took cable cars to Whistler. Whistler is beautiful while it is covered by snow. First, when we arrived the top of Whistler, we had our lunch beside the snow mountain. So that we could have lunch outdoor and were surrounded by the white snow. I felt awesome!

This is my first time to touch the snow, I believed this experience will never be forget in my mind. The snow is soft and cold, so we could barely step on it. We help each other took many photos and videos up there to record our happy faces.

I have to say, we just like 8 crazy kids who like having snowball fight! We threw snowballs to each other! Steven was the craziest! He even wanted to throw the snow to Mimi’s camera! Don’t you think he was A SILLY LAD? LOL!!! Btw we all enjoyed the view and the time we spent together.

Vancouver Aquarium

Vancouver Aquarium

In the aquarium, w
e saw many species of marine life, for instance, there are jellyfish, garden eels, lionfish, a dolphin, penguins, and sea otters.

I love looking at the corals the most! Typically, corals live in compact colonies with many identical individual polyps. They are the important reef builders that inhabit tropical oceans and secrete calcium carbonate to form a hard skeleton. It was great to have a close-up look at them.

Nature is so amazing!

The US-Canada border

The US-Canada border

After taking a two-hour ferry, we arrived back on the mainland. We headed first to 0 Avenue - the US-Canada border.

The border is nothing more than a road. It has posts on the side of the road, which say the United States on one side and Canada on the other.  It is certainly very easy to walk across the border, but there are strict laws against doing it and Canadians seem quite good at following laws.   Since it is illegal to step on US soil without a Visa, we only took a few photos, and left immediately and headed into Vancouver.
